So, What’s This All About?
Hassle-free gardening makes the best use of natural processes to help produce food with minimal effort.
At its core, it’s based on two of the most efficient practices; container gardening and natural farming.
And relies on three main components:
- Compost-based growing media.
- Containers for plant growth
- Storage Bins to house the compost, earthworms, and other microorganisms.
As you might have guessed, the magic of hassle-free gardening lies in the compost—or, more so, the life within it.
Compost creates a self-sustaining ecosystem that nourishes plants and reduces the need for constant maintenance.
How to Set Up Your Hassle-Free Garden
Believe it or not, it’s much easier to set up than you might imagine. In fact,a you can do this over the weekend if you follow the steps below.
Step 1: Choose the Right Spot
Spend some time observing areas around your home and make a not of areas that receive at least 6 hours of sunlight.
💡 Consider balconies, driveways, rooftops, or even indoors if they meet the criteria.
Step 2: List Plants You Want to Grow
Make a list of all the herbs and vegetables you’d like to grow.
Start with easy plants like lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, and herbs like thyme and mint.
Step 3: Gather Tools and Supplies
You’ll need a couple of tools and supplies to set up your kitchen garden.
These include containers, potting mix, seedling trays, compost, a watering can, scissors, chicken wire, and a large barrel.
Step 4: Choose Your Containers
I usually recommend starting with black plastic nursery pots.
However, you can use just about anything, provided they are larger enough for the plant you intend to grow.
Step 5: Choose Your Potting Soil
Use compost or peat-based mix with perlite or coarse sand for drainage.
You can make your own potting mix using 2 parts compost to 1 part coarse sand/perlite.
Step 6: Transplant Seedlings
Initially, I recommend buying seedlings from a local nursery. Ensure they are healthy.
Then, transplant seedlings into pots filled with moist potting soil. Water thoroughly.
Step 7: Water and Care for Plants
Water plants when necessary. Try to ensure that the containers do not dry out completely.
Check for pests and diseases during watering sessions.

💡 The Power Of Compost and Earthworms
Up to this point, you would have set up a simple container garden.
However, the real magic happens when we allow nature to take over… How?
By focusing on feeding the soil rather than the plants, we let nature do the work.
This is the essence of the hassle-free gardening system — create a self-sustaining ecosystem that thrives with minimal intervention.
So, from now onwards, you’ll need to add compost to your pots to nourish the “soil” and attract beneficial organisms like earthworms.
These critters will produce natural fertilizers to help keep your plants healthy and vibrant without needing store-bought stuff.
